Tobin James Mueller - collaborative and solo artist

Welcome to my website. Please start off by checking out my recordings. My latest is a jazz collaboration with saxophonist Woody Mankowski, The Muller's Wheel, and I'm very excited about it. Please check it out. Woody also played on Rain Bather, which won Best Album of 2009 (JazzChicago.net). I just purchased a new Steinway and am letting it inspire me to write pieces for an upcoming solo piano album (to complete the Trilogy started with Morning Whispers and 13 Masks), a Funk Project with Woody, and a favorite songs collection, Song of Myself, with me singing at the piano. I also continue to share early drafts and collaborative ideas on MacJams.com, from which many tunes on my A Bit Of Light album arose.

I have added photos to the website, which I sell to hotels and private collectors. I have begun to organize them into coherent collections, more will follow. And I've written an impressionistic version of my memoirs as a series of dreams (Book Of Dreams), which includes many illustrations.

I've gone through several periods of artistic discovery but remain dedicated to creating new musical expressions. (I can't remember the old ones so I kind of have to make up stuff.) I have a belief that the Internet will be a path to cooler projects and maybe even a blueprint to freer lives, but most of my beliefs end up being wishful thinking.

I've journeyed through musical theatre, jazz, progressive rock, classical orchestrations, fiction writing, politcal essays, domestic humor and blogging. Some of these I want to journey through again. I've written plays, ballets, film scores and children's music; poetry, historical fiction and video games. I dig it all. But I've always thought of myself as a composer, first. Currently, I continue to explore solo piano, rediscover the B3 organ, and enjoy life with Suzanne.

I've had the good fortune of working with tons of fine people, most of whom you'd never recognize, although I've recorded with Dave Brubeck, Ken Schaphorst, Donny McCaslin, Entcho Todorov, Dane Richeson, Janet Planet, among others, and played on stage with Maynard Ferguson and more. Five of my musical dramas were produced in Manhattan during the 90s, and my 2004 musical drama piece Runners In A Dream, set in the Holocaust, was part of the York Theatre new play series. In London, I was inducted into the United Nations’ 1994 Global 500 Roll of Honor for my work with youths and the environment. As the founder of ArtsForge, an award-winning online arts community (founded in 1998), I realize the power of the Internet to communicate across great distances, to cohere specialized communities and provide new audiences.

But the true highlights of my life have more to do with sitting in front of my new baby grand or communing with Suzanne when she gets home from work. As I struggle with the genetic lung disorder A1AD that threatens to shorten life a bit, moments at the keyboard become timeless and transcendent.

A lifetime ago, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marquette University (in 1977, when they won the National Championship), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, studying musical composition, physics and journalism. In all my artistic endeavors, no one ever asked to see a degree, but I'm glad I went nonetheless.

Commissioned Works...
13 Masks 13 Masks - solo piano - A commision designed to create an interweaving of jazz, avant-guard classical, and ragtime blended through the "chaos of the subconscious." I've tried to always compell, surprise in these musical stories. Influences include Monk, Brubeck, Joplin, Medeski, as well as Shostakovich, Ligeti and Bartok. I composed these pieces for myself, regardless of genre, market, or any one else's expectations, reminding me how powerful solo piano can be.

13 Masks Morning Whispers - solo piano - New age / Neo-classical solo piano combining lyrical impressionism, romance and contemporary jazz influences. Songs of tragic beauty. Original commission was to create a cycle of solo piano songs to promote healing and inner joy. Contemplative. I've donated many copies of this CD to non-profit organizations dedicated to peace and inner discovery.

Collaborations...
Although I have loved performing as a solo artist, I highly value the energy and inspiration collaboration lends. I'm always looking for inventive projects to join. Write me!

All of my stage plays involved collaborations. Writing musical theatre has honed my collaborative instincts. Directors, producers, design people, actors and co-writers all get in the act. It's a whirlwind of creativity. Unlike film, in theatre the author provides the ce
ntral vision... one of the reasons I love it.

My latest collaborations have been with my friend and jazz saxophonist Woody Mankowski. The result is The Muller's Wheel, 14 tracks of pure funky joy. We wanted to write our own happy history of jazz, from swing to funk, and this was the result. It is definitely my most upbeat album. We plan on a driving funk album next year. I love funk. I'm looking forward to it.

A decade ago, I formed a progressive rock band with guys spread all around the globe. We call it "Audiocracy," a play on words indicating both the reign of music and the post-political nature of the band's lyrics. Progressive rock is a combination of rock inventions, classical virtuosity, and jazz freedoms; so much fun. My son, Twøn, sings lead, which is another joy, making the group inter-generational as well as cross-continental.

My nephew Chris Mueller was the pianist formost of my Off Broadway shows. He knew his way around those scores. He and I collaborated on bringing the music of my musical "Creature" into the jazz realm. The result was Rain Bather (jazz ensemble)
. Please check out the album on iTunes and CDBaby. It was winner of "Album of the Year" for 2009 at JazzChicago.net.

My 2007 progressive folk fusion recording, A Bit Of Light, features wonderful contributions from very talented musicians. On many of these tracks, the solos they have added resulted in sig
nificant collaborative additions. Several are players I met on MacJams, others are from NYC:

13 MasksEntcho Todorov - violin
Donny McCaslin - tenor & soprano sax
Bill Barner - clarinet & tenor sax
John Luper - guitar
Thor Oliverson - bass & guitar;
Martyn Kember -Smith - fiddle
Woody Mankowski - soprano sax

The entire spirit behind Artsforge.com (the website I founded) is collaboration. When it was fresh, we created recordings, a space opera video game, and planned several eBooks. But eBooks never took off and the gaming world changes so fast, the collaborative aspect of the site kind of skidded sideways. ArtsForge is now a great place to view art and listen to music and dream of what might have been.

I was tooling around the net when Garageband first came out (the Mac music software, Jan. 2004) and discovered a new site, MacJams. I contacted the admins and they agreed that it would be cool to emphasize collaborations. I've been working with them ever since and the site has spawned tons of great artist-to-artist projects. The future is bright, but there's a lot of work to do before the promise meets the expectations. I keep plugging away.
