What is this touch?
This hand you share?
Can I know - what are you offer?
An empty hand, where will it lead?
Will I find or fill more empty promises?
What can I ask?
What can you say?
What can we do to shake the past?
To shape our way?
What to hold on to?
Your empty hand, my empty heart,
And a hope this touch might last.
Please take me, awake me, to where I can follow.
I’ve lost my way and can’t seem to start.
Please hold me, enfold me, unroll my tomorrow.
Reach deep inside me,
Don’t let me go.
Love, come and show me now
What is greater than the answers I seek:
Your opening hand.
What is this love?
This change I feel?
All the world is somehow brighter now.
This touch you shared, a storm of light.
You’ve made my days, my life, a dance of miracles.
Within your hand, one empty hand,
You held surprise, disguised in want:
A simple gift,
The gift of choosing.
Within this joy.
Within these hands.
Within this touch.
What is this touch?

My wife and I printed these lyrics in our wedding programs and gave the song away on a CD (filled with more of our favorite love songs) as gifts at our reception. Although the lyrics and arrangement are mine, the music is a collaboration between me and my nephew, Chris Mueller. Back when we both lived in Manhattan, we work on many projects together. I look back on those days fondly.
