Dreams.
What are you dreaming?
Do you know I am here,
while you sleep?
What do you see
when my hands hold you near?
When my breath touches you,
can you feel?
Maybe when you awake,
you’ll know to never fear
That I should go away.
You’ll know I’m always near,
When you awake.
When you awake to me.
When you awake to me,
All the world’s ache will fall away,
like clay, cleaned away.
I’ll give you all you need.
Make ev’ry dream come true.
All you can take from me.
All I can give to you.
When you awake…
When you awake to me.

This song is from my Off-Broadway musical Creature and features Woody Mankowski singing the part of Frederick Frankenstein, Victor's older brother (who ends up being the villain). Frederickis singing to Hilde, a little witch girl that befriends the Creature and is able to control him, somewhat. This version was recorded during the 1998 Rain Bather sessions.
The song proved so popular, it was used in another of my shows, Runners in a Dream (written with Randyl Appel). In that show, it's sung by a ghost mother to her daughter hiding in a basement from the Nazis. In fact, we may reprise the song in our current collaboration, Someone Else's Sky. That would make it my most used song of all time. (It's also used in the nightclub act that my good friend, David Meulemans, is touring.
I first wrote this song in 1992 for a sciecne fiction musical drama that I never completed, Dreamless. Most of the music for that abandoed show was rearranged and recorded by my progressive rock band Audiocracy (see Revolution's Son.) But this song didn't work as a power ballad. So, like a few other tunes from Dreamless, they were folded into the Creature project. It remains one of the prettiest songs I've ever written.
